Here are some of the questions you should ask yourself when looking at buds. Each species of tree has its own distinctive bud.

The seed of the grey birch is so small and light that it almost never attaches itself to the ground on its own. At the first sign of spring, when March showers come, the cones swell with water and then burst when cold weather returns. The cone scales protect the seeds throughout the winter. Nature has given the grey birch an ingenious reproductive system: its fruit appears as cones once its flowers have bloomed in the spring. Its sole requirement: plenty of sunlight. The grey birch is quite content in any soil. Some items, like food, simply degrade over time and cannot be repaired, so use it before it's gone. Some items, like tools, degrade only when they're used and can be repaired with other items before they break. However once an item gets to 0% and breaks, it cannot be repaired. A hatchet, for example, is just as useful at 100% as at 1%. This does not apply to all items, however. For instance, a rifle that's low on condition will jam frequently. The condition of an item will sometimes affect its usefulness. The item's condition is displayed as a percentage on its inventory icon. Most items have a condition that will decrease until it breaks or spoils. You will probably need it eventually when you learn what to do with it. I suggest collecting everything you can and storing it in a known location, no matter how mundane it seems. Everything is important for some aspect of survival. There is no such thing as a useless item in The Long Dark.
